Happy, Healthy, and Healing

Today marks one month after Brody’s open heart surgery 🖤 I am in absolute awe of how far he has come in such a short period of time. Looking back, there were so many fears and unknowns that were to take place, and now today he is happy, healthy, and healing.

God has blown us away with His goodness in taking care of Brody in the operating room, and by allowing him to heal and come home so quickly. Eleven days after birth Brody got to come home, and a few days later we took him back to the hospital for his two week post op check-up.

We brought Brody into the Cardiologist’s office at Sutter General, and were greeted by his care team who were so excited to see him out and about, and not in his PICU bed hooked up to wires and tubes.

As we sat down with Brody’s heart surgeon, he smiled ear to ear- so proud of Brody’s recovery, and said “I’ve never done a two week check up here in the office with a discharged baby.”

Kyler and I were shocked. We knew that Brody was a miracle, but to hear from this renowned Stanford Heart Surgeon that he has never had a baby with this quick of a recovery was absolutely astonishing.

In truth, I really shouldn’t be that surprised- we serve a powerful, merciful God who can take a terrible situation like a baby with a broken heart and work a miracle to not only HEAL, but speed up the recovery process beyond what has ever been possible.

It reminds me of the song “Beautiful Things” which says –

“You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us”

Before sin entered the world, all was perfect and exactly as God had designed it, but now living in a broken world, things like non-functional new born hearts exist. The good news is that God is active and moving in our lives and making beautiful things out of the dust.

God is truly the ultimate redeemer, and seeing him take this terrible situation and turn it into something BEAUTIFUL is worth celebrating and worshipping.

Some of the beautiful things I get to see daily are watching Brody take big healthy breaths, seeing him smile, kick his legs, and make big poopy diapers. I also get to see my husband be an incredible father, and fall deeper in love with him.

This month has been one of awe and wonder, and an absolute gift. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
